Advanced Gmail SMTP Options (Google Workspace Relay & Restricted Gmail SMTP)

Gmail offers multiple SMTP server options depending on your use case. The standard smtp.gmail.com works for most users. Google Workspace Relay (smtp-relay.gmail.com) is designed for organizations needing higher volume sending with static IP requirements. The Restricted SMTP (aspmx.l.google.com) can only deliver to Gmail and Google Workspace addresses and doesn't require authentication.

  1. 1

    Sign in to Gmail account

  2. 2

Go to Google Account → Security

  3. 3

Enable 2-Step Verification under "Signing in to Google"

  4. 4

Click App Passwords (or search in top bar)

  5. 5

Choose app (Mail) and device, or select "Other"

  6. 6

Click Generate and copy the 16-character password

  7. 7

Use this App Password in SMTP settings

Gmail SMTP Sending Limits & Quotas

Free Gmail accounts allow 500 emails/day with 500 recipients per message, resetting every 24 hours. Google Workspace (Paid) accounts allow 2,000 emails/day with 2,000 recipients per message, also resetting every 24 hours.

Why Not Just Use Saleshandy SMTP With Gmail?

If you're planning to use Gmail's SMTP for cold email, then let me warn you. Google is not built for high-volume sending. It's designed for personal or light business use, not for bulk outreach campaigns.

Consequences of exceeding limits include: Gmail will temporarily lock your account for 24 hours. If repeated, domain can be flagged. Deliverability issues even when under the limit.

If you need higher limits or want to send to all domains without restrictions, connect Gmail to Saleshandy's SMTP in one click.
